I wouldn't use this tool in avionics, but this is definitely a best open-source ASN.1 compiler to start for the ASN.1 software designer. Radiowavegeek Posted Open source, free and efficient.

BERViewer

BERViewer is a program that allows the user to 'view' BER/DER encoded files such as X.509 certificates and S/MIME messages. It comes in a Windows 9x/NT/2K version and a Mac OS X version. It is absolutely FREE! Below is a screen shot, showing two open files:
Windows Version
Mac OS X Version
For more information on ASN.1 see the following links:
  • A free program by Peter Gutman, under 'Security Standards', halfway down the page. The program is called 'dumpasn1.c'. No, I didn't use it to write BERViewer, but I do use his dumpasn1.cfg for the OIDs. BTW, Peter does have a quote from me concerning PKIX on his page.
  • If you want to pay for an ASN.1 compiler, here's the one to get: OSS Nokalva
  • Good web site for Object Identifiers (OIDs)
  • Another viewer that allows editing Asn1Editor. For Windows only and requires .NET.
